Richard Ahiagbe, Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party, has clarified that the passage of the LGBQI Bill is not solely dependent on the outcome of the ongoing Assin North By-election, despite the National Democratic Congress’s campaign to the contrary.
The NDC has suggested that if the Assin North electorate votes for the NPP, the party will have the majority in parliament to accept LGBTQI in the country. Therefore has urged constituents to vote for the NDC candidate, Gyakye Quayson, to ensure the passage of the anti-LGBTQI Bill that would criminalize same-sex marriage in Ghana.
In an interview with Oyerepa TV in Assin North, Ahiagbe emphasized that the fate of the LQBTQI bill is not dependent on the Assin North by-election.
So it is important for voters to understand that the passage of this bill is a matter of national concern and will be decided by the entire parliament, not just the outcome of one by-election.
“I’ve heard NDC folks saying that when NPP wins the Assin North By-election, we will have the majority to pass LGBTQI Bill. These are politics of lies. The victory of Charles Opoku in the by-election won’t give us a majority to pass LGBTQI because we need 2/3rds of the majority to pass the bill. So when Charles Opoku wins, it won’t be enough to pass the bill. “Ahiagbe told Oyerepa TV.
He added that, the NDC has no campaign message and that the reason they are peddling lies in their political campaign in the Assin North by-elections.
The NPP Director of Communications emphasized the importance of voting for the candidate who aligns with their values and beliefs, rather than being swayed by false promises of the NDC.
