The University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) has responded to allegations by Ghanaian-American comedian Michael Blackson following the death of his 83-year-old mother, rejecting claims that the hospital mishandled her treatment.

In a statement released on August 5, 2026, UGMC expressed sympathy to Michael Blackson, and his family but insisted that the accusations made against the facility do not reflect what occurred during his mother’s medical care.

The hospital said the claims shared by the comedian on social media contained several inaccuracies and failed to represent the circumstances surrounding his mother’s treatment after she was referred to UGMC.

“We wish to state unequivocally that the facts presented by Mr. Blackson on social media contain numerous inaccuracies and do not accurately reflect the events that transpired in the provision of medical care to his 83-year-old mother, who was referred to UGMC from a peripheral hospital and throughout her stay at UGMC from May 27 to July 16, 2026 (about eight weeks),” the statement said.

UGMC explained that it would not publicly address specific details about the late woman’s diagnosis or treatment because of patient confidentiality rules, which remain binding even after a patient’s death.

“However, consistent with the ethical standards of our institution and our core values, we have a duty to safeguard the confidentiality of every patient’s medical and personal information, an obligation that continues even after death. Accordingly, and out of respect for the dignity of the deceased and the privacy of her family, we will not disclose or discuss in the public domain the details of any patient’s diagnosis, treatment, medical records, or account of care,” it stated.

The medical centre also rejected suggestions that its healthcare workers prioritise financial gains over patient welfare, stressing that treatment decisions are guided by professional judgment and medical standards.

“At UGMC, all clinical decisions are made solely by qualified healthcare professionals in accordance with sound medical judgment, established standards of care, and the best interests of the patient. These decisions are made in consultation with, and with the consent of, designated and authorised family representatives where required,” it said.

The hospital added that its financial systems are separate from medical decisions and follow established institutional procedures.

The response comes after Michael Blackson accused UGMC in a series of posts on X of allegedly misdiagnosing his mother’s condition and prolonging her suffering. He claimed the situation was handled poorly and alleged that some staff members were more concerned about money than saving lives.

The comedian also alleged that he faced difficulties when he attempted to move his mother to another medical facility and questioned some explanations given to him regarding her condition.

UGMC’s latest statement marks the hospital’s first public response to the controversy, as it maintains that it provided care within professional and ethical standards while respecting the privacy of the deceased and her family.
