A deadly attack occurred on the night of Wednesday, April 9, 2025, when gunmen stormed the palace of a local sub-chief in Poayamire, a community in the Binduri District of Ghana’s Upper East Region. The violent incident resulted in the death of one person and left two others, including the sub-chief, with gunshot wounds.
Naba Atamburi, the sub-chief of Poayamire, was among the victims injured in the assault. Two of his family members were also shot during the attack. All three were quickly transported to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital for emergency medical care. Sadly, one of the injured individuals succumbed to his injuries en route to the hospital.
The motive behind the attack remains uncertain, but residents suspect it may be connected to the ongoing Bawku conflict, which has led to increased instability in the region.
Tensions in the Binduri District have been especially high in recent weeks, following an alleged police shooting that resulted in a fatality. Since the resurgence of the Bawku conflict in October 2024, at least 83 people have reportedly lost their lives in related violence.
So far, security forces have not issued an official statement regarding the palace attack. However, investigations are underway, and authorities are working to restore calm to the increasingly volatile region.
