A Computer Science student of the University for Development Studies (UDS), Nyankpala campus, Salifu Nurudeen, has been sentenced to death by the Tamale High Court for the murder of fellow student Wumpini Mohammed Zakiu.
The incident occurred in September last year and was linked to a romantic dispute. Nurudeen’s girlfriend, also a UDS student, had reportedly ended her relationship with him and begun dating Wumpini.
On September 25, Wumpini’s body was discovered with multiple stab wounds, and his mobile phone was missing. Investigations by the police cybercrime unit led to Nurudeen after the victim’s phone was traced to his location and found hidden under his bed.
Further evidence revealed that Nurudeen had sent messages from Wumpini’s phone—one pretending to break up with the girlfriend, and another directed to a friend of the deceased.
He was arrested after being lured to Jubilee Park. While he admitted to sending the text messages, he denied involvement in the murder.
After reviewing the evidence, the Tamale High Court found Nurudeen guilty of murder and handed him the death sentence.
