Tragedy struck in Kukubi, a town in the Kwaebibrem Municipal District, as two miners lost their lives when a galamsey pit caved in during the early hours of the day.
Eyewitness accounts reveal that the two miners were trapped when the pit they were working in collapsed.
Despite frantic efforts by fellow miners, only the lifeless bodies were recovered.
The first victim was retrieved with the aid of an excavator, but tragically, his lower body was severed in the process.
The second miner’s body was recovered several hours later, following traditional libation rites performed at the site.
The police have since transported the bodies to the mortuary as investigations continue.
The incident highlights the persistent dangers associated with illegal mining activities, which continue to claim lives in the region.
