Two killed, 14 injured in Nchiraa Yam Festival disturbances

Two people have been killed and 14 others injured following disturbances that broke out during the celebration of the Yam Festival at Nchiraa in the Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region.

The incident occurred on Saturday, October 3, 2026, after the official festival programme had ended, according to the Bono Regional Police Command.

In a statement issued on Monday, October 5, the Police said preliminary investigations showed that the disturbances began around 5:30 p.m. as Nana Tabiri Yaw III and his sub-chiefs were being escorted to his palace.

The situation reportedly escalated after a gunshot was fired, resulting in multiple casualties.

The Police said two people died, while 13 others, including a police officer, sustained gunshot wounds and are currently receiving medical treatment.

The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Wenchi Methodist Hospital mortuary, where they are being preserved pending autopsy.

Following the incident, the Wenchi Divisional Police Command intensified patrols in Nchiraa to prevent further disturbances and restore calm to the community.

The Bono Regional Police Command said investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify those responsible.

The Police assured the public that efforts are underway to arrest anyone found to have participated in the disturbances.

Residents have also been urged to remain calm and cooperate with the Police as investigations continue.
