Tragedy struck the Gbawe Zero Machandi Estate in the Weija-Gbawe Municipality on Monday, August 25, 2025, when two children were discovered dead in an uncovered drainage system.
The victims, aged five and seven, had been reported missing the previous day after they were last seen playing near the drain. Their lifeless bodies were later retrieved, leaving residents in shock and grief.
Community members, speaking to Adom News, described the drainage as a long-standing “death trap.” They accused local authorities of neglect, noting that several appeals to have the system covered or repaired had gone unanswered.
Residents warned that the danger could escalate with the coming heavy rains, as erosion from the open drain is already threatening to wash away the area’s main road.
They are renewing urgent calls for authorities to act swiftly to avert further loss of lives.
