Mr Patrick Yaw Boamah who is the Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central, has urged the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) to settle things amicably with individual bondholders as this can go a long way to affect them in the 2024 elections.
The individual bond holders have argued that they want their investments exempted from the ongoing government debt exchange program.
Speaking in an exclusive with Nana Yaw Mensah Joel on Oyerepa Breakfast Show Tuesday, the Okaikwei Central legislator explained that if government wants to include the individual bonds in it debt restructuring program, then they must make sure they have a broader consultation with all affected individuals.
According to him , the opposition NDC faced similar challenge and that is what affected them in the 2020 elections and he wouldn’t like that to happen to the fortunes of the NPP party.
“We all saw what happened to the NDC with DKM and God is Love during the 2016 elections .The banking sector cleanup or financial sector cleanup affected [NPP] in a bad way in the 2020 elections ” he said
The Individual Bonholders Forum had already petitioned the Minister demanding a total exemption from the debt exchange program on the claims that government has failed to engage them .
“We may end up putting our party at a higher risk of losing the 2024 general elections because when it comes to people’s savings and investments they don’t look right, they don’t look left, they look for who is going to save them,” he added.
He disclosed that He is happy that the Minister says he is going to engage all affected individuals for further consultations and hope that all these are sorted without touching their investments for this will have a significant effect on chances of the party.
