“The Lion of Lufodo” — Veteran Actor Olu Jacobs dies at 84

Veteran Nollywood actor Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs MFR, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.

The legendary actor died on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, with his family confirming the news and describing him as “The Lion of Lufodo.” The family also appealed for privacy while mourning the veteran actor and expressing gratitude for his life.

Born on July 11, 1942, Olu Jacobs built a remarkable career spanning theatre, television and film. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London before establishing himself as a respected actor in British television and film.

He later became one of the most recognisable faces of Nigerian cinema, featuring in more than 100 productions and earning widespread acclaim for his commanding performances. His career also earned him several honours, including the 2007 Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role and Nigeria’s national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).

Olu Jacobs was married to veteran actress Joke Silva, with whom he co-founded the Lufodo Group and Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts, contributing to the development and training of talents in Nigeria’s creative industry.

In recent years, Olu Jacobs largely stayed away from the public spotlight after Joke Silva disclosed that the actor had been living with dementia with Lewy bodies, a condition that affected his health and public appearances.

His death brings to a close the career of one of the most influential actors to emerge from Nigeria’s theatre and film industry. For decades, Olu Jacobs remained a respected figure whose performances across generations helped cement his place in the history of African cinema.

The veteran actor’s passing is expected to trigger an outpouring of tributes from colleagues, filmmakers, fans and institutions across Nigeria and beyond.
