“Tell Yaa Yeboah to shut up” – Irene Opare fires back over ‘begging’ claims
Veteran Ghanaian actress Irene Opare has strongly rejected claims by media personality MC Yaa Yeboah that she was pleading with President John Dramani Mahama for financial assistance.
The dispute follows an earlier interview in which Irene Opare appealed to President Mahama to acknowledge her and support her upcoming 60th birthday initiative, “Clean Mama”.
In the interview, the actress said she had been associated with the political tradition long before the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was formed and felt her contribution had gone unnoticed.
“Mr President, I know you know me. This is your Clean Mama; all I want to say is, please turn your back and look at me. I’m standing right behind you. Just turn and look at me,” she said.
MC Yaa Yeboah subsequently interpreted the appeal as a plea for help, a characterisation Irene Opare has fiercely disputed.
According to the actress, she is financially established and was not asking the government to meet her personal needs. She explained that her request was specifically for sponsorship for the “Clean Mama” project after she was asked what she wanted for her 60th birthday.
“I want Yaa Yeboah to know that I am well established. I am 60 years old, and maybe you don’t know anything about me or know my house, but I am well established. I am not begging. You are a journalist, and you have to listen to the whole conversation,” she added.
She further accused the media personality of relying on social media captions instead of listening to the complete interview before commenting.
“Go and listen to the whole interview before you talk. If you use bloggers’ captions on social media to make a statement, you will be wrong,” she advised.
Clearly angered by the remarks, Irene Opare warned MC Yaa Yeboah against making further comments about her without understanding the full context.
“I don’t take shit; tell Yaa Yeboah to just shut up because she can be my daughter. That should be her first and last. If she claims she is a journalist, she should go and read everything before she comments,” she warned.
The confrontation has since stirred debate over how public figures’ comments are interpreted online, particularly when short social media captions are used to frame longer interviews.
