Tanker Driver Burnt to death, another injured as fuel tanker catches fire at Asutuare Junction

A tanker driver has died after a diesel tanker caught fire at Asutuare Junction in the Eastern Region, leaving his mate injured.

According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, June 28, 2026. The Service said it received a distress call at 4:41 a.m., prompting the deployment of four fire engines from the Somanya, VRA, Akosombo and Gbetsile fire stations.

The first firefighting team, led by Station Officer II Achisey from the Somanya Fire Station, arrived at the scene at 5:30 a.m.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control by 6:03 a.m. and completely extinguished it at 6:30 a.m.

In a statement, the GNFS said the tanker and its diesel cargo were completely destroyed by the fire.

The driver was found burnt to death at the scene, while his mate sustained injuries and was rescued before being rushed to Akuse Hospital for medical treatment.

The Ghana National Fire Service said investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire.
