Supreme Court quashes arrest warrant for Kevin Taylor

The Supreme Court of Ghana, in a 4-1 majority decision, has overturned a bench warrant issued for the arrest of US-based Ghanaian broadcaster Kevin Taylor.

The decision was delivered on Tuesday, July 22, by Justice Tanko, who presided over the five-member panel. Other members included Justices Senyo Dzamefe, Suurbaareh, and Philip Bright Mensah, while Justice Ernest Yao Gaewu dissented.

The bench warrant had been issued by a High Court in 2020, following alleged contemptuous comments Taylor made against Justice Eric Kyei Baffour.

However, the Apex Court ruled that the warrant was unlawfully issued and lacked the proper legal basis under the circumstances.

The ruling brings an end to a five-year legal dispute stemming from Taylor’s critical commentary on a case presided over by Justice Kyei Baffour.
