“Stop turning my sister’s death into politics” – Mzbel hits back at critics
Ghanaian musician Belinda Ekua Amoah, popularly known as Mzbel, has responded to growing public discussions surrounding the death of her sister, Laila, insisting that the tragedy should not be turned into a political or personal debate.
In a self-recorded video shared on her official Instagram page, the “16 Years” hitmaker expressed disappointment over attempts by some individuals to attach political interpretations to her family’s loss.
Mzbel’s comments come after she raised concerns on social media that her sister died after allegedly being unable to secure a hospital bed at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital during an emergency situation. Her claims generated public attention and prompted the hospital management to issue a statement inviting the musician to provide details to support an investigation into the matter.
While acknowledging the need for accountability, Mzbel said her intention was not to create division but to highlight challenges within the healthcare system and advocate for improvements. The musician stressed that losing a loved one is a painful experience that cuts across political, religious and social boundaries.
She said that, “Some people have chosen to turn my sister’s death into a political argument or a debate about my personal beliefs. The truth is simple: grief knows no political party, religion, or spiritual path. Losing a loved one is painful for every family.”
Mzbel explained that she decided to speak publicly because she believes no person should be denied access to essential medical care when their life depends on it. The veteran musician added that she remains focused on grieving her sister while seeking answers through appropriate channels, urging the public to approach the matter with empathy.
“I spoke out because no one deserves to be left without the care they need. My hope is that this tragedy leads to change, not division. I will continue to mourn my sister with love and pursue this matter with dignity. May we all choose compassion over mockery,” she added.
As investigations and discussions around the circumstances surrounding Laila’s death continue, Mzbel has maintained that her ultimate goal is to ensure lessons are learnt and steps are taken to prevent similar experiences for other families.
