Veteran Ghanaian reggae/dancehall musician Sugar Ranking, has predicted that Livingstone Etse Satekla, known professionally as Stonebwoy, could become the first Ghanaian artiste to win a Grammy Award ahead of his long-time industry rival Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., popularly known as Shatta Wale.

Speaking in an interview, Sugar Ranking expressed confidence in Stonebwoy’s international appeal, arguing that the Afro-dancehall star’s musical style gives him an advantage in the race for recognition from the Recording Academy, organisers of the Grammy Awards.

Although he admitted that winning a Grammy remains one of his own ambitions, Sugar Ranking said he believes Stonebwoy is more likely to achieve the historic feat first.

“Even though I am also looking at winning it, I think Stonebwoy will be the first to win it,” he stated.

When asked who between Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale could secure Ghana’s first Grammy trophy, Sugar Ranking confidently responded: “Stonebwoy will win.”

Explaining his position, the veteran musician said the Grammy platform favours artistes who demonstrate strong vocal ability and versatility, qualities he believes are evident in Stonebwoy’s music.

“You can’t win a Grammy with hardcore dancehall. Stonebwoy does a lot of singing, and that will help him win ahead of Shatta Wale,” he added.

Ghana is yet to produce a Grammy Award winner, despite several artistes receiving nominations and gaining international recognition. Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale remain among the country’s biggest global music exports, with both artistes building strong international fan bases over the years.

Sugar Ranking, who continues to contribute to Ghana’s reggae and dancehall scene, is currently promoting his latest single “No Pressure.” His comments have since triggered discussions among music fans over which Ghanaian artiste has the strongest chance of making Grammy history.
