The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has explained why the Police Special Operations Taskforce, popularly known as the “Black Maria,” was withdrawn from the Tamale metropolis.
The decision triggered protests by some youth in Tamale, who called for the return of the taskforce, arguing that its presence helped curb the illegal drug trade in the area.
Speaking to members of the Special Operations Taskforce in Accra on Monday, March 9, the Police Chief clarified that the unit is meant to carry out temporary assignments rather than operate permanently in one location.
According to him, the team had successfully completed its operations in Tamale, which led to the decision to redeploy the officers to other areas where their services are required.
“When you say a special team, it doesn’t become a permanent team. You go somewhere, perform your duties, leave the rest for the local police to handle, and then move on to another place,” he explained.
Mr. Yohuno noted that the taskforce had also undertaken similar successful operations in areas such as Ashanti South and Diaso before its redeployment.
He further urged the public to understand the operational strategy behind the taskforce and to continue supporting the Ghana Police Service in maintaining law and order across the country.
