The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has officially declared four parliamentary seats vacant.
Three of the affected seats belong to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) while one is for the National Democratic Congress(NDC).
The affected MPs include the Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament and MP for Fomena, Andrew Asiamah Amoako, an independent MP who has filed a nomination to contest the 2024 parliamentary election on the ticket of the NPP and Peter Kwakye Ackah (Amenfi Central).
The others are Cynthia Mamle Morrison of Agona East and Kwadwo Asante of Suhum, all of whom are currently in Parliament on the ticket of the NPP but have filed to contest as independent parliamentary candidates in the 2024 elections.
On the back of this development, the NDC MPs will now form the majority with 136 seats while the NPP will be the minority with 135 seats.
The ruling followed a motion filed by former Minority Leader and Tamale South Member of Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu, invoking Article 97 (1)(g) of the Constitution.
What this means is that Ajumako Enyan Essiam MP, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson will now be the Majority Leader while Effutu MP, Alexander Afenyo-Markin will be the Minority Leader.
It comes after extensive discussions and arguments presented by both sides of the house.
Meanwhile, Mr Afenyo-Markin has filed an injunction application at the Supreme Court, challenging the move by the Minority.
