Ghanaian traditional music icon Sherifa Gunu has returned to the spotlight with a new single titled “South Africa”, a song addressing xenophobic violence and the need for unity among Africans.

The award-winning singer, known for her unique blend of traditional sounds and contemporary rhythms, has remained one of Ghana’s prominent female traditional artistes for more than two decades, with popular songs including “Yumiantaaba,” “Mbrantie,” “Kujani” and “Bingo”.

In her latest release, Sherifa Gunu uses Afro-Highlife influences and indigenous sounds to highlight concerns over attacks against African immigrants in South Africa.

The song carries a strong message against xenophobia, with the singer expressing disappointment over violence between Africans and calling for peaceful coexistence.

“South Africa, you’ve betrayed us,” she sings in the song.

Beyond its social message, the track combines traditional instrumentation with modern Highlife elements, showcasing Sherifa Gunu’s ability to preserve cultural sounds while addressing contemporary issues.

The release marks another chapter in the career of the celebrated musician, who continues to use her voice to promote African identity, social awareness and unity through music.
