President John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghanaians that his administration will not cancel the Free Senior High School (SHS) program but will instead work to enhance it.
Speaking during his first State of the Nation Address in Parliament on Thursday, February 27, he reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening the policy, which was widely introduced by the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.
“Mr Speaker, let me repeat it once again. I, John Dramani Mahama, will not cancel the Free SHS Program. I will rather make it better from the implementation problems that it has been facing,” he stated.
The president’s remarks come amid speculation about the future of the policy under his administration. While some critics have raised concerns about funding and implementation challenges, Mahama emphasized that his focus is on making the program more effective and sustainable.
He acknowledged the difficulties currently facing the Free SHS system, including overcrowding in schools, inadequate infrastructure, and insufficient teaching materials.
He assured Parliament and the nation that his government would introduce reforms to address these challenges, ensuring that students receive quality education.
“Our priority is to make Free SHS better, with improved facilities, adequate learning resources, and well-trained teachers to provide the best education for our children,” Mahama said.
The Free SHS policy, which provides free tuition and other benefits to Ghanaian students, has been a major point of political debate since its introduction. While its benefits have been widely acknowledged, concerns remain over funding, quality of education, and sustainability.
Mahama’s commitment to improving rather than canceling the program is expected to reassure parents, students, and educators who have been eager for enhancements to the system.
