Tragedy struck at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra on Wednesday, as a stampede during the ongoing Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise claimed the lives of six people.
Thousands of applicants had gathered at the venue, eager to secure positions in the armed forces. The large crowd and intense pushing at the entrances reportedly led to chaos, resulting in multiple injuries and fatalities.
The deceased have been transported to the 37 Military Hospital mortuary, while several injured individuals are receiving treatment in the hospital’s casualty ward.
Security personnel have cordoned off the area, and the military has closed key routes around El-Wak Stadium to restore order and support rescue operations.
Authorities are investigating the incident to determine the exact cause of the stampede and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
