Professor Charles Marfo, Provost of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, has sparked controversy by suggesting that illegal miners, commonly referred to as galamseyers, should be shot and killed.
His comments come amid escalating concerns about the catastrophic effects of illegal mining on Ghana’s environment and communities, prompting calls from organized labour, led by the Trades Union Congress (TUC), for the government to ban small-scale mining.
During a panel discussion on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, Prof. Marfo emphasized that Chinese nationals involved in galamsey operations would never dare to engage in such destructive activities in their home country.
He implied that the severity of the situation warrants drastic measures to protect Ghana’s natural resources and communities.
