Gizella Tetteh Agbotui, Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West, is urging a thorough review of the Senya Bereku Landing Beach project and refuting claims made by the Ministry that the project is 97% complete.
The lawmaker for the Awutu Senya West Constituency is expressing frustration in persuading the Works and Housing Committee of Parliament to reevaluate the project.
The Senya Bereku Landing Beach project is one of 10 landing beach projects nationwide initiated by the government to enhance the local fishing economy in the communities it serves.
The government allocated $235 million for the entire project, with a promise of completion within two years. The project includes additional facilities such as a fish market, net mending hall, daycare centre, toilet facilities, administration building, ice-making plant, cold store, workshop, and premix fuel station.
Despite the positive reception from the fisherfolk in Senya Bereku, concerns have been raised about the structural integrity of the project. Fishermen in Senya Bereku, located in the Awutu Senya West District of the Central Region, are questioning the durability of the Senya Landing Beach project.
According to reports, six colleagues have tragically lost their lives, and numerous fishing boats have been destroyed due to sand accumulation on the landing beach. This has created significant challenges for the fisherfolk in operating their vessels.
The fishermen describe the water along the landing beach as exceeding its normal levels, resembling a sand bed rather than a functional beach. This has made it nearly impossible for them to launch or retrieve their canoes from the sea.
Furthermore, the fishermen have been left with no parking space, as the sand bed has taken over the entire area. They are calling for authorities to reconsider the project and potentially relocate the landing beach further into the sea to allow for more space along the stretch of the beach.
