Security personnel in Nkwanta in the Oti Region have intercepted a large quantity of ammunition in two separate intelligence-led operations, leading to the arrest of two suspects.

According to a statement from the Ghana Police Service in the Oti Region dated May 17, 2026, the first operation involved the interception of a 66-seater MGI bus with registration number AS 248-P at a security checkpoint in Nkwanta.

A search conducted on the vehicle uncovered 750 live J/G cartridges concealed in a black polythene bag hidden inside three brown boxes, each reportedly containing 250 rounds of ammunition.

One suspect, identified as 53-year-old Hudu Mahama, who was acting as the driver’s mate on the bus, was arrested in connection with the seizure.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect admitted ownership of the ammunition during interrogation.

In a separate operation conducted on the same day, a joint Police and Military task force recovered another box containing 125 AA cartridges and 125 BB cartridges after it reportedly fell from a suspect’s motorbike during a pursuit.

The rider managed to escape with a second box of ammunition, according to the police.

Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of a second suspect, identified as 57-year-old Christian Kwasi Alonise.

The Ghana Police Service said both suspects are currently in custody assisting with investigations, while efforts are underway to retrieve the missing ammunition and apprehend the fleeing motorbike rider.

The Joint Security Task Force reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace and security in the area, adding that operations to clamp down on illegal possession and transportation of ammunition will continue.
