The Anglican Child and Youth Development Centre, also known as Compassion, a Non-governmental Organisation (NGO), recently organized a Road Safety Campaign in the Juaben Municipality of the Ashanti Region. The aim of this sensitization program, titled “Drive Alive,” was to raise awareness among drivers and residents of Juaben about the perils of reckless driving.
Mr. Samuel Adu Gyimah, the Assistant Planning Manager at the National Road Safety Authority in the Ashanti Region, emphasized the importance of drivers refraining from overspeeding, as it is a major contributing factor to motor accidents on the Ejisu, Juaben, Efiduase to Kumawu highway, and throughout Ghana.
He also highlighted the role of alcohol and drug consumption, particularly marijuana, in causing road accidents. Mr. Gyimah urged drivers to abstain from these substances while operating a vehicle.
Furthermore, Mr Gyimah called upon passengers to refrain from pressuring or influencing drivers to exceed speed limits. This practice not only endangers the lives of everyone on the road but also contributes to the overall problem of road accidents.
The NGO’s Road Safety Campaign successfully shed light on the dangers of reckless driving and the need for responsible behaviour on the roads. By educating drivers and residents of Juaben, the event aimed to promote a safer and more secure environment for all road users.
Speaking to Oyerepa News, Mr George Opoku Amponsah, a member of the organising committee (Compassion) also expressed the need for drivers to be very vigilant when driving.
He raised concern about the lack of road markings on the Ejisu-Juaben route and asked authorities to fix the problem.
The Director of the NGO, Mr Osae Kwame Asiedu on the other hand assured that his outfit will continue to embark road safety campaign to enlighten drivers and the Juaben residents on road accidents.
