Mr Akwasi Addai Odike, a Ghanaian businessman and politician has outlined one solution to Ghana’s roads crashes that are claiming the lives of many citizens than a novel disease.
According to him, if he were the country’s President, he would revoke all driving licenses and compel all drivers to go back to driving school. The move he believes will help curtail frequent roads accidents in the country.
“If I were President I’ll revoke all licenses, everybody must go back to driving school and that’s the best way to solve the problem,” Odike stated on Oyerepa Breakfast Time hosted by Akua Asieduwaa.
The last data from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service confirmed that 232 lives perished through road crashes in January 2022. A total of 972 vehicles involved in various accidents resulted in 1,237 injuries. In March, a series of fatal accidents were recorded as well. Just yesterday, April 4th 2022, 5 people died in a fatal accident at Bunso in the Eastern region. Most of these fatalities were caused by human error.
As a result of these fatalities, Odike says, driving licenses of drivers must be revoked; they must go back to driving school to learn the profession very well.
He said, should he become the President of Ghana, he would stringently monitor the activities of the driving schools to prevent them from issuing out licenses to unqualified drivers.
Odike added that his government would give every driver some points regarding accidents and the moment a driver exhausts all his/her points, that individual would be bound permanently from driving.
“I’ll give every driver 12 points and when you involve in an accident, depending on the magnitude, then we slash some of the points remaining half, when you exhaust all, you can’t drive again in the country.” Odike hinted.
