The Chiefs and people of Wurunia community in the Kasena Nankana West District of the Upper East Region have appealed to the government, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), and philanthropists interested in health to come to their aid to complete a self-initiated Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) Compound project.
In an interview with the Oyerepa News, the Assembly member for Wurunia Electoral Area, Hon Vincent Abongpari noted that the project in its current status would need urgent support from the District Assembly, Member of Parliament, NGOs, individuals, among other concerned authorities to complete it and make it usable to improve quality health delivery in the Area.
“We decided to take our destiny into our own hands by embarking on the CHPS Compound project to bring healthcare services to the doorsteps of the people and beyond as there is no single health facility in the entire electoral area,” he said.
This, he explained, would also improve healthcare accessibility, especially for children, lactating mothers, and pregnant women when completed.
“We want to appeal to the government to take up the project and award it to a contractor to complete it for us. The little resources we can provide are what we have done. That is the most important project for us,” the Assembly member said.
He also stated that the project would take years to complete if the government or non-governmental organizations do not take it up to complete it for the community.
The Assembly Member said among the 46 Electoral Areas in the Kassena Nankana West District, Wurunia Electoral Area is the only Electoral Area created since 1992 without a school, CHPS, water, with electricity connected to a few houses. “We are lacking everything, our only hope is the hardworking women, and here is the situation we have found ourselves in. Women cannot have access to basic healthcare, and it is very unfortunate,” he further lamented.
He said the residents were ready to provide communal labour for the completion of the project as it was dear to their hearts.
