A criminologist who doubles as a lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, KNUST, Dr Jones Opoku Ware has stated that it is high time Ghanaians put a stop to blaming women for failed marriages.
According to Dr Jones, most women end up being emotionally, psychologically and physically abused in marriage and yet they cannot gather the courage to get divorced or to set themselves free because they are scared of being blamed and stigmatized for the failed marriage.
Research has it that, about 15 percent of murder cases are spousal killings in which 38 percent of the victims are women, again women are 9 times more likely to be killed.
In an interview with Akua Asiedua on OyerepaTV’s Breakfast Time, Dr Jones also revealed that a lot of scenarios and circumstances trigger spousal killings. These include; sexual jealousy, low level of communication, suspicions of infidelity and insecurities among married couples.
He however suggested that more attention should be paid to cases of spousal killings and there should be enough psychological advice therapy to improve the wellbeing and safety of spouses.
The criminologist said in other to reduce the rate at which spousal killings are increasing, married couples should be patient and understand each other to prevent any form of abuse. Spouses should seek counselling, therapy and psychological advice when the need arises.
