The Ashanti North Regional Police Command has arrested two individuals in connection with the murder of Eric Obeng Darko, the former headmaster of Dampong Senior High School in the Ashanti Region.
The suspects, identified as 38-year-old Mubarak Mohammed and 48-year-old Prophetess Elizabeth Darkwah, were arrested on June 9 and 17, respectively. They have since been arraigned before the district courts in Kodie and Suame and remanded into police custody.
According to preliminary police investigations, the incident stems from a fraudulent scheme initiated in 2024, in which Prophetess Darkwah allegedly convinced the deceased to part with an unspecified sum of money. She claimed the funds would be used to help him uncover a stash of ancient family gold.
As part of the alleged ruse, Prophetess Darkwah, accompanied by Mubarak Mohammed, visited Mr. Darko’s residence in Bampenase near Mamponteng under the cover of night. There, they reportedly dug up 20 pieces of a yellowish substance, claiming it was gold that needed to be “purified” at her church before it could be sold or used.
However, the Prophetess repeatedly avoided the deceased’s attempts to meet her for the supposed purification ceremony. Investigations suggest that she later conspired with Mubarak Mohammed and three other yet-to-be-identified individuals to abduct and kill Mr. Darko before he could arrive at the church.
The police say the deceased was taken to Aboabugya, where he tried to escape but was run over by a Honda Odyssey vehicle driven by Mubarak Mohammed, leading to his death.
The two accused remain in custody and are expected to reappear in court on July 4, 2025, as efforts continue to apprehend the three other suspects currently at large.
