Ghana’s popular church, First Love Church, has sparked widespread conversation online following certain activities taking place in the church.
Several videos circulating on social media show congregants of First Love Church cheering for couples-to-be as they kiss in church. According to the church’s practice, couples who are preparing to get married within a short period are asked to kiss publicly as part of what they describe as “kissing practice before marriage.”
The incident has generated massive reactions on social media. As a result, Reverend John Wesley Amenuku Agble, founder of the Apostolic Recovery Movement and pioneer of THE ARMY, has criticized the act.
“They line up the youth, even though they are not yet married, and ask them to stand before the church and practice kissing. In your time, were such things done in church? One couple kisses and the congregation shouts, ‘No, we are not satisfied,’ and the pastor asks them to do it again. When the people are finally satisfied, the couple sits down and the next couple-to-be is called. For the next 30 minutes, this goes on in church — the church Jesus Christ died for. This is what we are practicing in church in this nation, and we know what follows kissing.”
He expressed disappointment over what he described as the introduction of practices that undermine the values of Christianity.
He added:
“Paul warned about these things because he knew a time would come when churches would engage in such practices. That is why he told Timothy to know how to conduct himself in the house of God, which is the pillar and foundation of truth. Truth has now been shifted away. I do not know what conclusion anyone can draw from this matter. Conscience is gone.”
Criticism continues to grow as several renowned pastors add their voices to the ongoing debate surrounding what many have described as an inappropriate act in the church.
