Professor Charles Marfo, Provost of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has accused President Akufo-Addo of exhibiting “party footsoldier” traits.
This comes after the President’s assertion in May this year that he will only hand over power to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Professor Marfo, speaking on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, described the President’s comments as “footsoldier talk.”
He emphasized that the decision on who becomes the next President lies with the Ghanaian people, not with Akufo-Addo.
“The only time President Akufo-Addo mimics the state of a footsoldier is when he says he wants to hand over power to no one but Bawumia. This is a power that lies in the hands of Ghanaians, definetley not with Akufo-Addo. That’s why I say his assertion is a footsoldier talk because he knows very well that, the will of the people is what he’s mandated to follow.”
Marfo suggested that Akufo-Addo’s comments are an attempt to appeal to his party base, as he knows that the people will likely vote for John Mahama.
“Akufo-Addo knows the people will surely vote for John Mahama. So when he meets his party people he tries to exhibit footsoldierism. Although he (Nana Addo)is not a footsoldier, he’s exhibiting their traits. ”
Prof Marfo questioned the President’s understanding of his mandate, stating that he should follow the will of the people rather than trying to impose his own preferences.
