President John Dramani Mahama has nominated Supreme Court Judge, His Lordship Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, as the next Chief Justice of Ghana. The nomination follows the removal of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from the position.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, September 23, by the Spokesperson to the President, Felix Kwakye Ofosu. According to the Presidency, the decision was taken in line with Article 144(1) of the 1992 Constitution.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s nomination has since been forwarded to the Council of State for consideration.
A statement from the Presidency described him as a distinguished jurist who has served with “diligence and integrity” throughout his career at the High Court, the Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court. It further commended his “invaluable contributions to Ghana’s jurisprudence” and his “unwavering commitment to justice,” which the government says makes him eminently qualified for the role.
If confirmed, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie will become Ghana’s new Chief Justice, taking over the leadership of the judiciary at a critical moment for the nation’s legal system.
