President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Ministers for Interior, Transport, and Foreign Affairs to collaborate and fast-track the rollout of an electronic visa (e-visa) system in Ghana.
The directive was issued on Monday, August 4, during the commissioning of two key digital infrastructure projects – the Air Navigation Services (ANS) system and the Multi-Agency Command Centre for the Advance Passenger Information (API) and Passenger Name Record (PNR) systems.
According to the President, the API and PNR platforms – designed to process passenger and travel document data – should form the backbone for launching the long-anticipated e-visa service.
“I’m directing the Hon. Ministers for Interior, Transport, and Foreign Affairs to collaborate to ensure that this platform is expanded to enable us to implement this long-awaited e-service for the country,” President Mahama said. “I’m also charging them to extend the system to sea and land border posts, integrate it with our e-gate systems, and adopt it for cargo data management and customs efficiency.”
President Mahama emphasised that the initiative is central to harnessing the full benefits of Ghana’s digital transformation, especially in travel and border security.
He noted that the e-visa system would simplify visa applications, reduce bureaucracy, boost tourism, and position Ghana as a more attractive destination for business and leisure.
“The future of travel is digital, and Ghana must not be left behind,” he added.
