President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Kingston for a four-day state visit aimed at strengthening diplomatic relations between Ghana and Jamaica, expanding cooperation across key sectors and advancing the global call for reparatory justice.

The President touched down at the Norman Manley International Airport on Sunday, August 2, where he was welcomed by senior officials of the Jamaican government.

The visit is expected to further enhance the long-standing partnership between the two Commonwealth nations while creating new opportunities for collaboration in areas such as trade, investment, governance and cultural exchange.

Ghana and Jamaica have maintained close diplomatic ties over the years, built on a shared African ancestry and a common historical experience. The visit is expected to reinforce those bonds and promote closer cooperation between Africa and the Caribbean.

A key item on President Mahama’s agenda is the issue of reparatory justice. Ghana and Jamaica have been among the leading voices advocating international acknowledgment of the lasting impact of the transatlantic slave trade, slavery and colonial rule. Both countries continue to call for constructive dialogue and meaningful reparative measures for communities affected by those historical injustices.

In addition to discussions on reparations, the state visit is expected to explore new avenues for cooperation in education, tourism, agriculture, the creative arts, trade and investment.

The two countries are also expected to discuss ways of strengthening economic partnerships and enhancing cultural and people-to-people exchanges, using their shared heritage as a foundation for sustainable development and deeper bilateral relations.
