The Ashanti Regional Police Command has commenced investigations into a violent incident in which a police patrol team from Jacobu was attacked by a group of civilians at Bepotenten Sukuum in the Ashanti Region.
The incident occurred on January 23, 2026, during a routine patrol operation. According to police accounts, officers had intercepted a 15-year-old boy and retrieved a pump-action gun from him. The officers subsequently directed the minor to inform the owner of the firearm to report to the police station with the appropriate documents.
Police said that as the patrol team was heading back, they encountered a large crowd of approximately 100 people who had mounted a roadblock. Some members of the group were allegedly armed with cutlasses and firearms.
The officers were reportedly attacked by the crowd, during which a service rifle was forcibly taken from one of the policemen. In the course of the confrontation, police opened fire, shooting the individual who seized the weapon, while another suspect was also injured. The stolen service rifle was later retrieved.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command has strongly condemned the attack, warning the public against acts of violence against law enforcement personnel. The police have assured that all individuals involved in the incident will be identified and brought to justice.
