A confrontation between the police and supporters of a candidate in the Ashanti Region’s Council of State election re-run has resulted in the arrest of one individual.
The suspect, believed to be a supporter of former NDC Chairman in the region, Yaw Obimpeh, was among those who defied police orders to stay behind barricades set up at the venue.
Today’s election marks a re-run of last week’s vote, which was abruptly halted when a group of individuals attacked Electoral Commission (EC) officials and destroyed several election materials, including cast ballot papers.
In response, the police have strengthened security measures for the re-run.
Vehicles are now restricted from entering the election venue, and approximately six police-manned barricades have been set up along the streets leading to the Prempeh Assembly Hall. These streets have also been closed to traffic.
Additionally, hundreds of police personnel equipped with crowd control gear have been deployed to maintain order at the venue.
