The Ghana Water Company, as part of its strategic efforts to ensure that debts owed by its customers are fully recovered with the operation dubbed “Pay or Get Disconnected,” has warned all customers to pay off their debt or get no water in this festive season.
According to the Ghana Water Company, over 50 percent of GWCL customers do not pay their water bills regularly.
The Deputy Managing Director of the Ghana Water Company Limited, Collins Nuntwiri Nuamah, speaking exclusively to Nana Yaw Mensah Joel, host of the Oyerepa Breakfast Show, explained that irregularities in payment by customers are affecting the ability of GWCL to carry out scheduled repairs and replacements of aged and obsolete equipment, pipelines, and other critical assets.
He noted that due to the high level of galamsey activities in some parts of the country, about 50 percent of the water treated by the company is wasted due to the impact of illegal mining activities.
“The use of more chemicals to treat water is costly and has increased tenfold as a result of galamsey.
“If you are a customer and owe more than two months, we have our task force walking around just to disconnect your water without any consideration unless you come to the office and make proper arrangements with us on how to pay the debt,” he warned.
He further explained that, apart from the Greater Accra region, the second region with the largest debt is Ashanti, and that they will do everything possible to recover all debt in this festive season.
Adding to that, the Ghana Water Company Limited, with the help of the Ghana Police Service, will embark on this revenue collection across the nation from its customers.
