Paa George reveals financial support from Mahama and industry players

Veteran Ghanaian actor Paa George, born George Kofi Ansah, has revealed that President John Dramani Mahama has been offering him financial assistance for years as he navigates life in old age.

The 89-year-old actor, reflecting on the people who have stood by him, also singled out actress Mabel Ametor Aso for special praise, saying she has consistently taken care of his monthly bills for more than three years.

Paa George also acknowledged the support of actress and media personality Nana Ama McBrown, alongside other colleagues who have occasionally checked on him and offered assistance.

“I am grateful to President John Dramani Mahama for helping me financially for several years, and actress Mabel Ametor Aso pays my bills every month for over three years. They have been very supportive, and once in a while, other colleagues also come around to support me like Nana Ama McBrown,” he said.

Despite his advanced age, Paa George said his decades in entertainment have contributed significantly to his physical vitality. He traced his acting career to Ghana’s early post-independence years, particularly the Concert Party tradition, where he worked with several pioneers of Ghanaian theatre.

“I started acting during brigade concert, since 1957. Many people I started with are no more. Acting gave me the privilege to exercise because I go to different locations like the Atwea Mountains to film, which is why I am still strong,” he noted.

Paa George later became a familiar face in Kumawood, appearing in several popular productions with stars including Kwadwo Nkansah, popularly known as Lil Win, Samuel Seth Kyere Karikari (Agya Koo), Mercy Asiedu, Nana Ama McBrown, Rose Akua Attaa Mensah (Kyeiwaa) and Bill Asamoah.

His latest comments highlight not only the challenges faced by ageing Ghanaian actors but also the importance of personal support networks in sustaining veterans whose contributions helped shape the country’s entertainment industry.
