Maxwell Kofi Jumah, a leading member of the New Patriotic Party, has sparked controversy by downplaying the devastating impact of galamsey menace.
Despite widespread protests and demonstrations against Galamsey’s destruction of lands, farms, and water bodies, Jumah claims the issue isn’t as severe as road construction’s environmental damage.
According to the former Kumasi Mayor on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, Tuesday, October 8 2024, even though galamsey is destroying various lands, its impact is not as severe as how road construction destroys lands in the country.
“Galamsey isn’t a good mining practice in Ghana but if I’m to extend it or narrow the argument on the logic that it destroys lands, I can tell you that, our road construction even destroys lands more than galamsey.” Kofi Jumah told Nana Yaw Mensah Joel, host of the show.
He added that, if Ghanaians are yelling for galamsey to be banned, then road construction which he believes destroys a bigger portion of the land should also be barred.
“If they’re talking about the ban on galamsey because of the destruction it causes, then road construction must also be forbidden in the country because contractors also destroy the land, so as builders also do.”
