On the second day of his three-day State visit to Zambia, President John Dramani Mahama addressed the country’s National Assembly, highlighting the deep-rooted and enduring bond between Ghana and Zambia.
“I am deeply honoured to address this August House and to extend warm fraternal greetings from the Government and people of the Republic of Ghana,” President Mahama said, as he expressed gratitude for the warm hospitality shown to him and his delegation in Lusaka.
Reflecting on the historical foundations of Ghana–Zambia relations, President Mahama traced their ties to Africa’s liberation struggles, stressing Ghana’s role in nurturing Zambian freedom fighters through education and ideological mentorship.
“Ghana’s support for Zambia’s liberation struggle is well documented, with generations of Zambian freedom fighters shaped by Pan-Africanist ideals at institutions such as the Wina Ideological Institute,” he noted.
The President urged African leaders to move beyond shared history and convert long-standing solidarity into concrete economic and social development for their citizens.
“Our forebears secured our independence and nationhood. Today, our task is to win the battle for economic transformation and lasting prosperity for our people,” he said.
President Mahama also addressed Africa’s place in global affairs, calling for greater self-reliance and stronger control over the continent’s natural resources to drive sustainable development.
