The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has officially removed former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta from its wanted persons list after receiving confirmation from his legal team that he will return to Ghana in May 2025.
Ofori-Atta was previously declared wanted as part of an ongoing corruption investigation into alleged financial misconduct during his tenure. However, in a letter dated February 18, 2025, his lawyers assured the OSP of his commitment to cooperate with the inquiry, citing medical reasons for his delayed return.
According to the legal team, Ofori-Atta is scheduled for a surgical procedure between March 20 and 21, requiring a recovery period of six to eight weeks. Consequently, they indicated that he expects to be back in Ghana between May 14 and 30, 2025.
“We respectfully indicate that our client, who is due for his return, cannot travel before six to eight weeks post-surgical intervention, as indicated in the hospital’s letter,” the legal team stated. “Considering the scheduled surgery and the necessary recovery period, our client expects to be back in Ghana between May 14 and 30, 2025. We hope this timeline will guide your office in scheduling an in-person appearance.”
The OSP, which had declared Ofori-Atta a fugitive from justice on February 12, 2025, has accepted the proposed return date and agreed to reschedule his interview accordingly. However, the office has warned that failure to adhere to the agreed timeline will result in him being re-listed as a wanted person.
“The Office of the Special Prosecutor remains committed to ensuring accountability,” an OSP statement read. “Should the former minister fail to return as indicated, all necessary legal measures will be taken to secure his appearance before the authorities.”
With this development, Ofori-Atta now has a definitive timeline to comply with the OSP’s investigation, with legal consequences awaiting if he does not fulfill his commitment.
