The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has levelled serious allegations against the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, accusing it of contract overpricing and nepotism.
According to the NDC’s national communications officer, Sammy Gyamfi, Vice President Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s family members have benefited from dubious and overpriced sole-sourced contracts.
Gyamfi alleged that Resource Assets Limited, a company owned by the Vice President’s brother, Abraham Bawumia, and his wife, has been awarded several contracts without a transparent or competitive process.
One such contract, worth GHS 52.2 million, was awarded for the rehabilitation of the Tamale Airport project in 2019. Gyamfi claims that this amount is excessive compared to similar projects, such as the construction of a brand new airport in Ho, which was built for $25 million (approximately GHS 100 million) by the previous NDC government.
The NDC has called for an investigation into these contracts and the potential misuse of public funds, citing the government’s failure to deliver on its promises to move away from sole sourcing and ensure transparency in procurement processes.
The opposition party has criticized the government for its handling of contracts, accusing them of dishonesty and duplicity. The government has yet to respond to these allegations.
