One killed by electrocution as heavy rains trigger widespread flooding in Accra

The victim, identified as 25-year-old Michelle Ofori Tachie, was reportedly electrocuted during the flooding in Alajo, one of the hardest-hit communities in Accra.

According to a JoyNews report, officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) confirmed the fatality as emergency response teams continue to assess the extent of the destruction caused by the floods.

The incident has renewed concerns over the persistent flooding that affects many low-lying communities in Accra whenever the city experiences prolonged or heavy rainfall.

Floodwaters submerged homes, roads, and business premises in Alajo and several other parts of the Greater Accra Region, forcing many residents to evacuate to safer locations.

The flooding also disrupted transportation, with several major roads becoming impassable and leaving motorists stranded for hours while traffic congestion worsened across the capital.

Residents said water levels rose rapidly following hours of continuous rainfall, trapping many people, including children and the elderly, inside their homes until rescue efforts began.
