One person has reportedly sustained a gunshot wound to the leg following a confrontation between a joint Military and Police team believed to be attached to the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) and a group of miners at Kyebi in the Abuakwa South Municipality of the Eastern Region.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting are still unclear, and authorities are yet to issue an official account of what transpired.

According to a report by Accra-based Channel One News, the incident occurred after a group of youth engaged in mining activities allegedly blocked the access road leading to the site, preventing the security team from carrying out its operation.

The miners reportedly accused the security personnel of selective enforcement, claiming the team had ignored other illegal mining sites in the area before moving to their location.

Sources said the aggrieved youth questioned why other individuals involved in similar mining activities were not being targeted, alleging bias and favouritism in the anti-galamsey operation.

The confrontation reportedly escalated, leaving one person with a gunshot wound to the leg. The injured individual was rushed to the Kibi Government Hospital, where they are currently receiving medical treatment.

Meanwhile, tension remains high in parts of Kyebi, particularly within the Zongo community, where groups of youth have reportedly gathered to demand justice over the incident.

As of the time of publication, the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ghana Police Service and the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) had not issued any official statement regarding the incident or the circumstances leading to the shooting.
