A tragic accident on the Asesewa–Abuosso road in the Eastern Region has claimed the life of one person and left several others critically injured.
The victims, all members of the Susana Wesley Mission Auxiliary (SUWMA) from Prampram, were returning from a group excursion to Boti Falls when their bus, carrying 26 passengers, collided with an Opel Astra taxi near the Abuatsam community.
Eyewitnesses report that the bus suffered a brake failure, causing it to veer off the road and plunge into a nearby valley. One passenger died on the spot, while multiple others sustained severe injuries.
Emergency response efforts were significantly delayed due to the poor condition of the road and lack of local rescue resources. The local police were unable to reach the crash site using their patrol vehicle, and the district’s only ambulance was out of service due to engine issues. As a result, an ambulance had to be dispatched from Koforidua to transport the injured.
A survivor noted that several passengers had earlier expressed concern about the driver’s speed and reported a burning smell, believed to be from overheated brake pads, shortly before the crash.
“We missed our way but the driver insisted he knew the route. People complained about the brakes, but he didn’t listen,” she said.
Billy Paul, the local GPRTU station master, who visited the site, described the scene as “heartbreaking,” expressing doubt over the survival of a severely injured woman found with a wedding ring.
Medical staff at Asesewa Government Hospital are working urgently to stabilise those injured in the crash.
