One person has been confirmed dead and another injured following a violent armed robbery attack on two small-scale miners, popularly known as galamseyers, at Aketekyieso in the Amansie Central District of the Ashanti Region.
According to reports, the two victims, believed to be brothers, were returning home from their mining site when they were ambushed by a group of unknown armed men. The robbers allegedly attempted to seize the victims’ gold detector machine during the attack.
An eyewitness said a struggle broke out between the assailants and the victims. In the course of the scuffle, one of the miners managed to escape, but the armed men opened fire, shooting his brother in the head. The victim died instantly.
The surviving brother was also shot while fleeing the scene but managed to seek help from nearby residents. He was rushed to the Obuasi Government Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.
Police later arrived at the crime scene and retrieved the body of the deceased, which has since been deposited at the Jacobu Government Hospital morgue for autopsy and preservation.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident and are appealing to the public for information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrators.
The tragic incident has left residents of Aketekyieso in shock and fear, with many calling on security agencies to intensify patrols in the area to curb the increasing cases of armed robbery targeting small-scale miners.
