Ghana has been thrown into mourning following the tragic deaths of two government ministers in a helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
Minister of Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, have been confirmed dead in the accident, which occurred at Adansi Akrofuom in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.
The confirmation was made by Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, who disclosed that the ministers were among four individuals who perished in the crash.
According to reports, the ministers were en route to Obuasi to attend a government programme — the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP) — when the incident occurred.
The ill-fated helicopter, identified as a Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) Z9 aircraft, had three crew members and five passengers on board, believed to include other senior government officials.
Eyewitnesses at the crash site described a harrowing scene, with the helicopter engulfed in flames upon impact, leaving the aircraft burnt beyond recognition.
In a statement issued by the Ghana Armed Forces earlier in the day, the military confirmed that contact with the Z9 helicopter had been lost after it took off from Accra at 9:12 a.m., heading for Obuasi.
“All efforts are being made to establish contact,” the statement read, before the devastating news of the crash emerged.
Authorities have launched a full-scale investigation into the cause of the crash, which remains unclear.
