Assembly Members of Old Tafo Municipal have refused to elect a Presiding Member (PM) to lead the proceedings of the assembly.
On Monday, February 11, 2024, Mr. Frank Amoako, who ran unopposed for the PM position, was rejected.
Despite going unopposed, Mr. Amoako faced rejection twice during the initial attempts to secure the position.
The Electoral Commission (EC) then decided that his fate would be determined in 10 days.
During his third attempt on Thursday, February 22, 2024, Mr. Amoako was rejected again, receiving 14 YES votes and 11 NO votes. These results did not meet the required qualifications, leading to a fourth round of polls.
In the fourth attempt, Mr. Amoako received 13 YES votes and 12 NO votes, falling short of the 18 YES votes needed for qualification.
Consequently, he has been disqualified from contesting for the PM position in Old Tafo.
Following the elections, Mr. Amoako expressed his dissatisfaction, suggesting that some assembly members voted against him due to his support for Vincent Ekow Assafuah, the MP for the Old Tafo-Pankrono constituency.
“This election (Presiding Member), all that I needed to do to win, I did but they voted against me.
They voted against me because a lot of the assembly members saw me rallying behind our Member of Parliament (Vincent Ekow Assafuah) whereas they were on the other side. Quite apart from that, none of them could point out my shortcomings.
I think they voted against me based on their personal interest.” Frank Amoako told Oyerepa News.
Another election has been scheduled to run another poll to elect a different candidate to fill the vacancy.
