Media personality Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah was arrested on Sunday, July 12, 2026, following a disturbance that briefly disrupted voting during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Constituency Executive Elections in the Afigya Sekyere East Constituency.

The incident occurred shortly after voting commenced when a group reportedly led by Afrifa-Mensah entered the polling centre, causing panic among delegates, party officials and election officers.

Witnesses alleged that some members of the group were carrying firearms, a claim that heightened tensions at the venue. However, these allegations have not been independently verified.

Videos widely shared on social media captured heavily armed personnel from the Ghana Police Service arriving at the scene to restore calm. One of the videos showed a man identified by witnesses as Afrifa-Mensah, dressed in a green-and-black jersey with yellow stripes, being escorted by police officers into a police vehicle.

Several other individuals were also taken into custody, while others reportedly fled as security personnel secured the polling centre and brought the situation under control.

Police subsequently cordoned off sections of the venue with red-and-white police tape and maintained a strong security presence to prevent any further disturbances.

Following the intervention by security officers, the electoral process resumed under tight security and continued peacefully, according to officials at the polling station.

By the time of publication, the Ghana Police Service had not issued an official statement confirming the arrests, identifying those detained, or announcing any charges.

Party officials appealed to delegates to remain calm and cooperate with security personnel to ensure the elections were conducted in a peaceful, free and transparent manner.

The NPP held its Constituency Executive Elections nationwide over the weekend as part of its internal reorganisation ahead of the 2028 general elections.
