Despite constant pleas to authorities by residents, urgent measures to repair the bridge have not been taken, prompting them to stage the protest.
Speaking on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, Monday, Fugah Kwame a member of the organizers of the protest, indicated that, some of the Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, the Oforikrom Member of Parliament, Dr Emmanuel Kwabena Marfo and the Municipal Chief Executive Abraham Kwame Antwi gathered some well-built youth of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to chase and stop the demonstration.
“As we the youth of Oforikrom were demonstrating over our death trap bridge, the Ashanti Regional Minister (Simon Osei Mensah), MP (Dr Emmanuel Marfo) and MCE gathered some NPP youth to prevent us from demonstrating.” He stated.
He said, despite the leaders of the protest passing through the legal means to embark on the protest that will facilitate the development of the Oforikrom, the MP and the Regional Minister decided to stop them.
According to him, the dilapidated bridge has claimed many lives therefore they will continue to press the government via protest to fix the bridge because “the only cry this government listens to is to demonstrate.”
