Offinso South: Newborn Baby Found Abandoned at Refuse Dump in Awisem

A newborn baby girl was found abandoned at a refuse dump in Awisem, a community in the Offinso South Municipality, in the early hours of Tuesday.

According to the Assembly Member for the area, Hon. Iddrisu Issaka, he received an emergency call from the Awisem Odikro at about 5:00 a.m., asking him to come to the community.

“When I got there, the Odikro told me that a woman had reported finding a newborn baby girl at the refuse dump,” Hon. Issaka said.

With the assistance of the Assembly Member, the Odikro, and community elders, the baby was rescued from the dump site and handed over to an elderly woman in the community, who bathed her and provided initial care.

The incident was subsequently reported to the Offinso Police Command. Police officers responded and transported the baby to St. Patrick’s Hospital for medical attention and further care.

The police have since launched investigations to trace the baby’s mother or any other persons responsible for abandoning the child.

Community leaders have appealed to residents with information about the incident to report it to the police to assist with the investigation.

Hospital authorities say the baby is currently receiving treatment and is responding well.

The incident has sparked discussions in Awisem and surrounding communities about child protection and the need for stronger support systems for vulnerable mothers.
