A heavy security presence has been deployed at Obuasi Senior High Technical School in the Ashanti Region following a violent disturbance in which some students allegedly attacked the headteacher and destroyed school property.

The students reportedly assaulted the headmaster, Abdullai Zakari, after accusing him of secretly burying a newborn baby on the school’s premises.

Mr Zakari, who is said to have sustained several injuries during the attack, is currently receiving treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi.

According to reports, the incident happened between 12:30 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. after a student allegedly spotted the headmaster’s vehicle near the school’s refuse dump.

The student reportedly alerted other students, who gathered at the location and claimed to have found the remains of a baby, believed to be between five and six months old, buried at the site.

Following the discovery, the students confronted the headteacher and allegedly attacked him.

The Police later intervened, exhumed the body and transported it to the morgue, preventing the situation from escalating further.

The students also reportedly vandalised parts of the school, including the headmaster’s bungalow. Some first-year students were allegedly attacked after their seniors accused them of supporting the headteacher.

The Obuasi Municipal Security Council, led by Faustilove Appiah Kannin, together with senior police officers, visited the school to engage the students and appeal for calm.

The Obuasi Municipal Police Commander, Superintendent Mahama Iddrisu, assured students that the police would provide adequate security and maintain peace on campus.

Six individuals have so far been arrested in connection with the incident, while police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the disturbance are ongoing.
